We look forward to having kids back at MJHS on Tuesday, February 2nd! Please make sure you review the district face covering expectations here: https://www.rsu67.org/article/389309?org=mattanawcook. They are more specific regarding the way masks must fit and the thickness of the fabric.

I have attached the MJHS practice and game schedule for next week ( Feb 1 through Feb 6). To access the schedule click on the link below:

Due to the decision to go remote at MJHS until 2-2, we will be delaying athletics until we are back in person. As always, thanks for your understanding as we navigate through these difficult challenges.

Just a quick update on sports at MJHS this week. With 7th and 8th graders being remote the schedule has changed. All 7th and 8th graders will not be able tp participate this week. We will allow the 6th grade boys and girls to practice as they are in school. Although not ideal, we are trying to provide some outlet for the students that are in person this week. The boys and girls 6th grade basketball players will practice Tuesday through Wednesday this week. The girls will practice from 2:15 to 3:15 and the boys will practice from 3:15 to 4:30. The one cheerleaders will not practice. Thanks for understanding. The link to the schedule is attached below

Dear Students and Families,
With our 7th and 8th graders learning remotely this week, January 25th through 29th, and 4th through 6th graders learning in-person, I’m sure there are some questions I’m hoping to answer.
There are schedules for in-person and remote instruction found here, http://rsu67me.apptegy.us/o/mattanawcook/browse/176041. Please remember that the remote schedule for grades 7 and 8 has an earlier start time than their in-person schedule. Students in grades 7 and 8 should check their emails and google classrooms before 7:50am on Monday for details from their teachers, and 8th graders should also check their google calendars.
I know there are questions about how we determine exposure and quarantine for students and staff. We follow the Maine CDC and DOE guidelines. Only students or staff who have spent 15 minutes or more within 24 hours in the same room/space with a confirmed positive case of Covid-19 are determined to be a close contact for exposure and are placed in quarantine for 10 days beginning the day after the exposure. We are able to reduce the risk of exposure by keeping students with their classroom groups as much as possible, and limiting the number of staff who work with each group of students.
Thank you for your continued efforts to support your student’s education in these challenging times.
Sincerely,
Sarah Hainer

Dear parents of MJHS student athletes,
I am excited to announce that we will begin on Monday, January 11th. The schedule has been posted to the athletic facebook page, and has also been posted on the MJHS athletic page. I have discovered that many of the athletes that initially signed up at school have not registered on family ID. They must register for a winter sport in order tp participate on Monday. The link is provided below:
https://www.familyid.com/programs/mattanawcook-junior-high-winter-2020-athletics-registration

Good Morning, Just a reminder that winter athletics will resume on Monday, January 11th. We will being practices as scheduled. Just a reminder that all participants should arrive ready to practice. Please do not arrive early, as we are following CBC guidelines regarding gatherings. Face masks must be worn at all times. Masks can be removed for hydration breaks as long as athletes remain socially distanced. It is important that if you are a remote learner that you are attending school the day of practice. If you are marked absent then you will not be able to practice. In closing, I would like to thank you all for the patience that you have exhibited during these challenging times.

Our last day of school before winter break is December 22nd, and it's a full day of remote school for MJHS. It's also ugly holiday sweater day for those who would like to participate. We're hoping all of our students and their families enjoy the holiday season and stay healthy.

12/14/20 at 7:37- Google is back up. There are major global google outages, so it is possible that it could go back down. You can resume emailing, zooming, and completing work online.

12/14/20: Please be advised that Google is down. This includes gmail, google classroom, google drive, and we are unable to zoom. IT is working to determine the problem.

As a result of today's decision( Saturday,December 12), to remain remote at MJHS, the start of winter athletics has been postponed until January 11th. So to be clear, we will not be starting practices on Monday, December 14th.

There are learning material packets available today until 3pm for 6th graders who attend MJHS on hybrid white days, groups 6-1 and 6-3.
All other students have received their materials needed for Monday and Tuesday or will find them on google classroom.
Remember that families who have decided that their students will be fully remote need to pick up and drop off materials on Mondays between 7 and 3.

Good morning,
Please note that the correct practice schedule has been uploaded for athletics that will be starting next week. I will also e-mail the students with a schedule attached. A couple things to remember, we will begin as Hybrid, so if they attend school on Monday and Tuesday then they will be able to attend practice. The same goes for the Wednesday and Thursday students. We will have to stay with this model until we are green and all in person.( If you are not in school that day then you are not allowed to attend practice) The attached schedule is the correct one.
Also, please drop students off ready for practice, they will not have access to the locker rooms this winter. Students should bring a bag with all their belongings that they will need. They must include a water bottle, we will be providing masks for the students this winter. Masks must be worn at all times. If you have additional questions please e-mail me at bmccarthy@rsu67.org. Thanks for your patience as we navigate through these challenging times.

We have received a number of requests in the last 24 hours for students to remain remote until after the holiday break. If you are considering this, we ask that you please call us at MJHS as soon as possible because our teachers need time to prepare materials for you to pick up. When our students are in-person or hybrid, the families who choose to be remote need to pick up materials on Monday between 7am and 3 pm for that week. Due to the increase in students switching to remote, you will receive notification directly if the materials will not be ready for your student on Monday. Thank you for your understanding.

Just another reminder, basketball and cheering will begin on Monday, December 14th at MJHS. Athletes must be registered on Family ID, a Covid 19 Assumption of risk form must be signed and returned before Monday. the link for Family ID and the form can be found on the MJHS Athletic Page.

12/9/20: MJHS experienced a brief internet outage this morning, but as of 8:00am we have internet back.

Just a final reminder to register your student athletes for winter sports. The link is provided below: Winter sports will begin on December 14th, more information will be provide later in the week. You must register for winter sports in order to participate.( Even if you registered for a fall sport)

We will also be collecting completed work during that time. Please make sure your child's full name is on papers being returned and put them in the labeled envelope they came in if you still have it. We will have a bin for each grade.
Please park along the front of the building where busses normally load and load and walk to the table at the front entrance.

November 19, 2020
Dear Staff, Parents, and Community Members:
As Thanksgiving approaches, we all look forward to celebrating and connecting with family, loved ones and friends. As people have holiday gatherings, travel, shop, or attend other events, close contacts increase, creating a potential uptick in positive cases.
Unfortunately, we continue to face rising cases of the COVID-19 Coronavirus across the nation, the state and our county. At their meeting last evening, the R.S.U. No. 67 Board of Directors discussed at length how to proceed with instruction after Thanksgiving, understanding that in-person instruction is best and remote learning can be challenging for families.
In order to reduce the risk of potential exposure and protect the health and safety of staff and students, all R.S.U. No. 67 schools will provide remote instruction for one week (November 30-December 4) following the Thanksgiving break. If health markers allow, we will return to in-person instruction with a remote option on Monday, December 7.
Details about meal distribution will be posted on the R.S.U. No. 67 website. Please contact your child’s teacher or school with specific questions regarding remote learning.
I wish our entire community a safe Thanksgiving and I look forward to having our students back to in-person learning as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Jean Skorapa, Superintendent of Schools

November 13, 2020
Dear Staff, Parents, and Community Members:
I am writing to you in response to the recent news regarding the rise in confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our state and county. At this time, there continue to be no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our schools. However, out of an abundance of caution, beginning Monday, November 16, 2020, all R.S.U. No. 67 schools will operate in a hybrid model in which students attend school two days and have remote education three days. We will continue in this model up to the Thanksgiving break.
R.S.U. No. 67 remains committed to providing a safe environment for our students to learn and our staff to work. I want to reassure you that the entire district will continue to follow all health protocols from the Maine Center for Disease Control and the Department or Education. We will continue to monitor the situation closely, keep parents/guardians informed, and make any adjustments to our learning environment and school plans as necessary.
I ask for continued cooperation from our families and community to adhere to our health protocols. Face masks are required on R.S.U. No. 67 properties per the Governor’s Executive order. Families are reminded to continue to complete the self- screening assessment daily for their child to check for symptoms of COVID-19 prior to coming to school each day. Children who have any symptoms and/or are feeling unwell need to stay home.
I would like to thank our families and students in advance for your support and continued engagement in learning during this time. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s school. I appreciate your support and look forward to our continued work together as we navigate through this challenging time.
Sincerely,.
Jean Skorapa, Superintendent of Schools

The online registration link for winter sports is now available on the MJHS athletic page. Please sign your student athletes up now. You are required to register for a winter sport even though you registered for a sport in the fall. Thank you!

In honor of Veteran's Day, there is no school this Wednesday, November 11, 2020.
The History of Veterans' Day
Formerly Armistice Day, Veterans Day is a holiday observed annually in the United States in honor of all those, living and dead, who served with the U.S. armed forces in wartime.
Some states observe the holiday on November 11 and others on the fourth Monday of October. Armistice Day, the forerunner of Veterans Day, was proclaimed in 1919 to commemorate the termination (at 11 am on Nov. 11, 1918) of World War I. On the first anniversary of the truce, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation eulogizing fallen Allied soldiers and referring to November 11 as Armistice Day. It became a holiday in the U.S., France, Great Britain and Canada.
The holiday acquired its present name and broadened significance in the U.S. in 1954. In Canada it is known as Remembrance Day, and in Great Britain, as Remembrance Sunday.

Students who ride bus 1 and bus 8 will be later than usual, potentially an hour or more, today, Thursday 11/29 due to an unexpected road closure on Route 2 in Winn. The first trip bus is currently stopped on Route 2. The second trip of those busses will be rerouting around through Lee and will be later than usual as well.

Dear Families,
It is that time of year when parent-teacher conferences are scheduled to take place. As you all know, we have rules that prohibit us from meeting in-person so all conferences must take place remotely. Parent-Teacher conferences are on Tuesday, November 10th and Thursday, November 12th. Grades 4-6 will hold conferences from 2:30pm to 5:30pm on both days. Grades 7-8 will hold conferences on Tuesday, November 10th from 4-7 and Thursday, November 12th from 3:30pm to 6:30pm. Parent-Teacher Conferences are by appointment only. Each grade level will be sending out information on how to set up your appointment and any other info that you will need in order to access the conference. The conferences are scheduled to be 10-15 minutes long. We are requesting that you Zoom in as your primary point of contact. This allows us to use our limited amount of outward lines for the families that do not have internet access. Thank you all in advance for working with us to get conferences scheduled for your child.
Christopher Cowing, Principal

The online registration link for winter sports is now available on the MJHS athletic page. Please sign your student athletes up now. You are required to register for a winter sport even though you registered for a sport in the fall. Thank you!

We have received many questions regarding dressing up for Halloween at school this Friday. Students will be able to dress up if they are able to follow the guidelines listed below:
MJHS Halloween Costume Guidelines
1.) Dress code – all regular MJHS dress code policies apply.
2.) Masks- you must be able to see, breath, and hear. Any mask that prevents staff from identifying students will not be allowed. Additionally, students must be able to wear their regular protective mask.
3.) Violence – no pretend “prop” weapons such as guns, knives, or swords. Fake blood or other liquids that could stain clothes is not allowed.
4.) Appropriateness – costumes cannot promote use of drugs, alcohol, or violence of any kind. Costumes may not be offensive or inappropriate in any way.
5.) All students participating must come dressed in their costumes. Time is not permitted for getting ready in the building.
Students who wear costumes that do not follow the costume guidelines listed above will be asked to change their clothing.

Red Ribbon Week at MJHS! Please join us in our MISSION to help keep kids drug-free.
Next week, Nov. 2-6, will be Red Ribbon Week at Mattanawcook Junior High. This is the largest drug-abuse prevention campaign in the nation. The challenges our youth face today are not the same as when we were growing up, but our desire to keep children and families drug-free has never changed: support our nation’s families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug free youth.

The MJHS yearbook advisor, Jean Hanington, will be taking student pictures on Friday, 10/23, for any students who did not have their picture taken on 10/14.

Tuesday, October, 13,2020- Due to the impending rain later this afternoon, all after school activities have been cancelled for today

Very Important information! On Wednesday October 7, 2020, the RSU No. 67 Board of Directors voted to move Friday release time for 4th-6th grade to 12:00pm and 7-8 to 1:00pm. This will begin on Friday, October 16, 2020. Please share!

Outdoor yearbook pictures for in-person students at MJHS have been postponed due to the windy weather today. We have rescheduled for Wednesday, October 14th, provided the weather cooperates. More information will be coming regarding pictures of remote students.

MJHS golf practice has been cancelled today(Thursday, 10-8-20), with several outgoing trips there will be no buses available. The practice will be made up at a later date.

Due to the impending rain expected around 3:00 there will be no after school athletic activities on Wednesday, October 7th. All practices are cancelled for today.

We will be having a flu shot clinic on October 15th. We will be sending paperwork home today authorizing Health Access Network to administer your child a flu shot. A huge thanks to HAN for providing this service to our school!

MJHS has internet back today, 10/2. Thank you for your patience, remote learning families.

As of 8:30am on 10/1, MJHS does not have internet. That means we cannot zoom with our remote learners. We will update you when our internet is back. Thank you!

We are getting reports of power outages from many families. We will not be marking kids absent if they are unable to connect due to the outages.

Due to the high winds and heavy rain forecasted for this afternoon all MJHs athletic practices scheduled for this afternoon,(Wednesday, 9-30-20) have been cancelled. Be safe!

A new practice schedule has been uploaded to the MJHS athletic page, please note that MJHS football begins Tuesday, September 29th, practice will begin at 3:00 and end at 4:30. Thank you!

Please note that a revised MJHS practice schedule has been uploaded to the MJHS athletic page. The changes do not effect this week.

The MJHS fall practice schedule has been uploaded to the MJHS athletic page. Please take note of the times that practices begin and conclude, as it is important that athletes have rides available once practice has concluded. Also, just a reminder that we request that parents wait in their cars for their student athletes. We will have a number of teams practicing at once, and we must follow the guidelines provided regarding the 100 person limit at all outdoor gatherings. As always thanks for the patience that you have exhibited throughout, lets enjoy the rest of the fall.

Below you will find the link to the Covid 19 screening app created by Northern Light. Athletes can simply add the app on their phone and show the coach the green check mark prior to the start of practice.

We need your help getting paperwork properly signed. We've returned forms to many of our students. One form is the green colored computer Acceptable use Policy or AUP. That paper needs to be signed in order for your child to use and take home their laptop. The other paper is the yellow Student Profile. This page requires a signature on both sides and some parents missed the second signature. Thank you for your help!

In lieu of a fall parent meeting I have created a slide show that will describe the measures we have taken to provide athletics for our student athletes this fall. Your son or daughter will be bringing home an assumption of risk form that will need to be signed by both you and your child. On that form you will see that there is a place for you to denote that you have watched the slideshow and read the Extra -Curricular handbook. Please see below that I have attached links for both the handbook and slideshow below.

We know that students and parents are wondering if there will be fall sports options at MJHS. We hope that there will be agreed upon guidance from State organizations this week. The next step after that is for the RSU No. 67 Board of Directors to discuss and decide how to proceed at their meeting on Wednesday, September 16th.

Other information that will be in the letter when you receive it is who the staff is for each grade, a bell schedule (which you really only need if your child is remote now or at some point because he/she will be staying in one room and the staff will be moving from room to room), and an exploratory calendar since there are now a different number of groups in each grade than days in the week. It's okay if your child doesn't have their sneakers for PE or a band instrument for the first day of school. Here is some of that information.
4th graders have Mrs. Gray or Mrs. Kotara for ELA and social studies classes and Mrs. Arnold or Ms. Marquis for math and science. They will all have Mrs. Pietras for ELA academic focus and Mrs. Wooley for math academic focus. These adults will be supervising their recess. They will also have Ms. Antes for art, Mr. Cox for PE, Ms. Kinkade for music, Mrs. Lujan for world language/spanish, and Mrs. Tilton for health. There is a calendar for these exploratory classes that shows which days each group has each class over the month of September.
5th graders will have Mrs. Albert or Mrs. Zaroff for math and science and they will all have Mr. Baker for ELA, Mrs. Whittier for social studies, Mrs. Paul for study hall and recess, Mrs. Sirois for ELA academic focus, and Mrs. Slike for math academic focus. These adults will supervise recess and study hall. They will also have Ms. Antes for art, Mr. Cox for PE, Ms. Kinkade for music, Mrs. Lujan for world language/spanish, and Mrs. Tilton for health. There is a calendar for these exploratory classes that shows which days each group has each class over the month of September.
6th graders will all have Mrs. Burns for social studies, Mrs. Carmichael for ELA, Ms. Lowell for math, and Mr. MacEachern for science, Ms. Arnold for math academic focus, and Mrs. Dickinson for ELA academic focus. These adults will supervise their study hall and recess. They will also have Ms. Antes for art, Mr. Cox for PE, Ms. Kinkade for band lessons if they play an instrument, Mrs. Lujan for world language/spanish, and Mrs. Tilton for health. There is a calendar for these exploratory classes that shows which days each group has each class over the month of September.
7th graders will have Mr. Fitch for social studies, Ms. Housum for ELA, Mrs. Jacques for math, and Mr. McPhetres for science. These adults will supervise their study hall. They will also have Ms. Antes for art, Mr. Cox for PE, Ms. Kinkade for band or chorus, Mrs. Lujan for world language/spanish, and Mrs. Tilton for health. There is a calendar for these exploratory classes that shows which days each group has each class over the month of September.
8th graders will have Mr. Brown for social studies, Mrs. Cole for math, Mr. Russell as a long-term sub for Ms. Ratledge in ELA, and Mr. White for science. These adults will supervise their study hall. They will also have Ms. Antes for art, Mr. Cox for PE, Ms. Kinkade for band and chorus, Mrs. Lujan for world language/spanish, and Mrs. Tilton for health. There is a calendar for these exploratory classes that shows which days each group has each class over the month of September.

I'm hearing that some families still have not received their classroom information letters after checking the mail today. We absolutely want you to have that information before the first day. Please email me at shainer@rsu67.org. To speed things up, please use the subject "classroom letter", include your name and your student's name and grade, and I will respond as promptly as I can with their classroom and group number as well as the entrance doors they should use. Thank you!

We can't wait to see our students on Tuesday! Our plan to open with an in-person model for those who didn't choose remote is still in place.

RSU 67 Fall Sports Update
The safety of all individuals involved in interscholastic athletics (student-athletes, coaches, athletic training staff, game day personnel, spectators) is the number one priority as RSU 67 considers the resumption of education-based interscholastic activities. The district’s administration team will continue to support all initiatives identified for mitigating the risks associated with COVID-19 and make decisions accordingly.
The RSU 67 administrative team will utilize guidance from the following groups regarding how to most safely conduct education-based sport programs:
1. Office of the Governor of Maine
2. Maine Department of Education
3. Maine Center for Disease Control
4. Maine Principals’ Association
5. Penobscot Valley Conference principals
6. Penobscot Valley Conference superintendents of schools
7. Local school administrations
8. Best practices as identified in other states and athletic associations
9. National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee
As many of you know the MPA has set September 8, 2020 as the date that school districts can officially begin fall athletics. As much as I would like to say that we have received the Ok to proceed, I cannot . We currently await the approval of the new guidelines that the MPA set last week. The DOE and CDC are currently reviewing those guidelines. I have been told that a decision is likely to be made before the week is over. Once they have been reviewed and approved, it will be up to individual districts to decide whether or not they will proceed with athletics. RSU 67 will base its decision on what is best for our athletes and the entire community. I do realize that this is a time sensitive issue, but ask that you remain patient as we sort through what has become a very difficult decision. We realize that the young people need athletics as an outlet and will continue to advocate for a return to play. Thank you all for supporting the young people of our community as we traverse these difficult times. I hope to have some positive news for you soon.
Sincerely,
Bill McCarthy
Athletic Administrator
RSU 67

I just wanted to update you all on fall athletics at MJHS, as many of you know the start date for fall sports has been moved back to September 8th. At that time we will be able to begin practice with the first playable date being September 17th. As we gather more information I will reach out to you regarding fall sports at MJHS. In the meantime it is important to log onto the MJHS athletic page and register your son or daughter for fall sports. We are only accepting online registrations at this time. The process is easy and fast. If you need assistance or internet access you can call Dolly Phillips at 794-3309 or send her an e-mail at dphillips@rsu67.org and she will help you out. Stay safe and enjoy the rest of the summer!

Access to the MJHS PowerSchool portal will be closed to parents and students beginning Tuesday, July 7th, for summer maintenance. Thank you!

We have 10 hardcover ($22) and 1 softcover ($16) 2019-2020 yearbooks available for purchase. These are first-come, first-serve at the MJHS office from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM through Friday, June 26th. Please pay with a check or cash in the correct amount.

The MJHS tennis courts will be made available to the public on Friday, June 19th. Please follow all CDC guidelines while using the courts.

The MJHS athletics on line registration has been set up for Fall sports, you can access the sight by visiting the RSU 67 webpage, click on sites, choose MJHS, once there hit the menu tab and choose MJHS athletics. You will be able to access the on line paperwork. Thank you! Winter sports will begin on August 17th.

I would like to provide an update regarding the use of the MJHS tennis courts. After conversation with RSU 67 administration it has been determined that opening up the tennis courts would jeopardize social distancing recommendations that have been passed down by Governor Janet Mills. I will keep you posted on any changes to this decision. Thanks for your patience.

This week (May 4 - 8) we are going to begin the process of helping 8th graders choose their classes for their Freshman year. Mrs. Cole will be running Zoom meetings Monday - Friday at 12:00 to share information about what courses are required and available for kids to take. It is very important that your student attend one of these meetings. She will be sending an email invitation to the meeting as well as a document called “Freshman Program of Studies” to your student’s Gmail account. You are welcome to sit in on the meeting. Once we get the initial work done, you will be contacted by an MA guidance counselor to finalize choices.

Just a reminder that now we we are back from April Vacation and we are requiring a once a week check in with your child’s teacher. Teachers have been spending the past few weeks calling homes and sending communication through your child’s school email. We also understand that connectivity may be a problem for some of you so we are offering the methods below for avenues of acceptable communication. Beginning April 27, 2020 and ending June 9, 2020 -Your child must check in once a week by using one of the following methods:
1. Attends a zoom meeting
2. Participates in google classroom OR responds to emails directly and emails questions as needed
3. Contacts the teacher by phone
We are still waiting to hear from several students. There will be important information coming to eighth graders in regards to signing up for classes at MA. Please make sure you have your child contact their teacher by one of the following methods above so they can be ready when the time comes. Please call me at 794-8935 or at ccowing@rsu67.org if you have any questions.
The link below will provide you with the letter that was sent home with all the packets at the last learning material distribution.
