The Mattanawcook Academy Lynx suffered their first loss of the 2023-2024 season Thursday evening in the Lynx Den 61-45 at the hands of George Stevens Academy. The Lynx got off to another quick start putting up an opening quarter 23 points en route to a 23-16 lead. Andrew Oliver poured in all of his 9 points in the frame with Avery Jordan and James Trott adding 5 points apiece. The Lynx were stymied 2nd quarter by relentless GSA pressure and were led by Senior Patrick Dagan’s hot hand. Dagan finished the first half with 20 points on a combination of perimeter shots and slashing drives. GSA led at halftime 29-27. In the third quarter both teams traded baskets with Junior James Trott scoring 5 points and Kooper McCarthy hitting two three pointers. With the score tied at 38, GSA went on a mini-run to close out the quarter leading the Lynx 49-41. Dagan and post player Colby Eaton (two 3s) paced the Eagle attack, with Dagan hitting a long, dagger 3 pointer at the horn. In the 4th quarter the Lynx went into an offensive drought again and were outscored 10-4. Both the Lynx and GSA now post identical 3-1 records. The Mattanawcook Academy Lynx now travel to Woodland of Baileyville on Saturday December 23rd for a doubleheader matchup with the host Dragons. JV/V start times are 1:00/2:30.

Saturday the Lynx wrestling team went on a 21 hour wrestling marathon; leaving in the wee hours of the morning the team went to Mt. Valley high school in Rumford to battle 25 other teams at the Franklin Savings Bank Invitational. Placing 8th out of 26 teams, the Lynx showed they are still a force in Northern B wrestling. With 3 wrestlers out with injuries, they were still able to get gets 94.5 team points. Congratulations to James Dube for collecting his 100th career win with a first round pin! What an accomplishment! James pinned his first three opponents to make it to the finals where he faced the 172 lb B state champion from last year. Losing a tough battle, James came off the mat and said “he likes a challenge” and looks forward to their next meeting. Freshman Clayton McPheters placed 2nd while dominating his first two matches to make it to the finals where he showed great abilities against his opponent from Fryberg Academy. At 113 Parker Theriault, while wrestling up a weight class showed great strength and determination. Parker Hunter showed great improvement going 3-2 on the day while getting 3 pins. Patrick Leonard started his day off with a quick first period win, while showing lots of improvement. Owen Harper, who made his season debut, placed 3rd in arguably the toughest bracket in the tournament. Owen went 3-1 on the day beating several of the top wrestlers in his weight class showing why he is one of the top contenders at 144 Kaiden Friend went 3-2 on the day missing the podium by only one match. Kaiden wrestled a great tournament. Kodiak Gerkin won his opening bout with a pin over his opponent. Ian friend was also one win away from placing In The tournament. Dropping his first bout in a tightly contested match, Ian won three straight matches in the consolation bracket. Ian showed a lot of grit and toughness in all of his matches. Topping off the day was Harper Jenkins, who wrestled up a weight class to 215lbs. Harper won 3 matches and wrestled the best he has ever wrestled, missing the podium by only one match, Harper did a great job. The Lynx will be back in action this Wednesday at Foxcroft Academy where they will take on Foxcroft Academy, Dexter and PCHS. GO LYNX!

Mattanawcook Academy 62 Central 44 On Monday night, the Mattanawcook Academy Lady Lynx secured their first road victory and second win of the season with a commanding 62-44 win over the Central Lady Red Devils of Corinth. The Lady Lynx, now boasting a 2-0 record, dominated from the start, establishing a 19-5 lead in the first quarter. Despite a spirited effort from Central to start the second half, the Lady Lynx maintained control, heading into the fourth quarter with a 45-36 advantage. The final quarter showcased Mattanawcook Academy’s strength as they embarked on a decisive 17-7 run, sealing the victory with a wire-to-wire performance. Senior guard Lauren House was impactful for the Lady Lynx, contributing 17 points and 5 assists. Her dynamic play included attacking the basket and sinking three crucial 3-pointers. The sophomore tandem of Addison Cyr (21 points, 8 rebounds) and Megan House (14 points, 6 rebounds) also delivered impressive performances, showcasing their all around abilities. Defensively, Juliana Cloukey and Navenah De La Cruz stood out, consistently applying pressure and disrupting Central’s shooters. The Lady Lynx displayed both energy and effort, securing a well-deserved win. Looking ahead, Mattanawcook Academy eagerly anticipates returning to their home court on Wednesday as they host PVHS, aiming to build on their early-season success. The scoring leaders were Natalie Turner with 10 points, Lilly Noonan contributing 11 points, Gray Freeman with 4 points, Riley Irish securing 8 points, and Eliza Donath adding 9 points. The MA wrestling team placed 6th out of 13 teams in Belfast opening up their season against very tough competition. 106-Clayton McPheters placed 2nd on the day. Clayton pinned his first two opponents in a dominating fashion to make it the finals. In the finals Clayton wrestled a great match but came up just short to take home the silver. 120- Parker Hunter placed 3rd after an opening round loss to Tibbetts of Dexter. Wrestling from the consolation bracket Parker secured 3 pins to battle back to the consolation finals when he avenged his loss to Tibbetts with a 10-4 victory. 132- Wyatt Leighton wrestled two very good matches against opponents who went on the place in the top four. 150- Kaiden Friend went 1-2 on the day in a stacked field. Losing his opening match to an eventual finalist, Kaiden pinned his next opponent, but came up short in the consolation semi final losing a very closely contested match. 157- Kodiak Gerkin wrestled several very tough opponents showing great growth from last year 175- Ian friend lost his opening match to an opponent from Dexter, but pinned his way through the consolation rounds to make it to the consolation finals where we met up with his opponent from Dexter and avenged his loss by pinning him in the fist round to place 3rd 190- Harper Jenkins placed 3rd with his only loss of the day being to last years class B 170 lb state champion. He pinned his other three opponents to finish off a good day of wrestling 215- James Dube walked away as the Lynx lone Champion pinning his way to the finals. In the finals he faced a tough opponent from Class A Oxford Hills but Dube showed his dominance by beating him by a score of 10-4. GO LYNX!

Mattanawcook Academy 57 Calais 19 In an impressive season opener, Mattanawcook Academy Lady Lynx dominated the Calais Lady Blue Devils with a final score of 57-19. At halftime, the Lynx held a commanding lead of 28-13. The Lynx defense continued to shine in the second half, limiting Calais to only 2 points over a 14-minute span. Sophomore Addison Cyr was a force to be reckoned with, scoring 31 points on an efficient 12-17 shooting and securing 12 rebounds. Megan House, another standout sophomore guard, contributed with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Senior guards Lauren House and Navenah De La Cruz added to the offensive threat, making 4 three-point baskets. The electric atmosphere at Mattanawcook Academy had the Lynx Faithful on their feet multiple times, cheering for their team's stellar performance. The Lady Lynx now look ahead to their first road contest against Central in Corinth on Monday. A big shoutout to all the dedicated Lynx Fans for their support! GO LADY LYNX!

The MA Lynx e-sports team is headed to the State Championship Tournament! Last night the team went up against Lake Region High School. This was a rematch from earlier in the season and once again we would go on to win both sets against them by 20-30 points. Our team was made up of Devin Martinez, Raven VanWormer, Ayden Dill, and Nolan Arthurs. They are currently still undefeated in the MPA Mario Kart League and are going on to face Maine Central Institute from Pittsfield on Saturday at Thomas College in the State Championship! GO LYNX!

The boy's soccer team made the community proud on Saturday as they accepted the Class C North Sportsmanship Award at Messalonskee High during halftime of the Class D State Championship Game. Throughout the season many opposing coaches and Athletic Directors reached out complimenting our team's attitudes, grit, and sportsmanship. Congratulations the the players and coaches for earning this stupendous accolade. The LA/MA girls XC is heading to the state championship meet next Saturday! This is the first time MA has made it to states as a team since 2015. We finished 4th as a team earning our spot!👟 Individual highlights for the 5k course (top 30 qualify as individuals): 20th place, Aubrey Gifford (24:14) 23rd place, Esther Teasdale-Stinson (24:31) 26th place, Isabelle Gerken (25:06) 31st place, Angie Willette (25:40) The boys also finished their season strong with individual PRs! The MA/LA “llamas” Cross Country team finished strong at PVCs today with the girls team coming in 4th overall. Both boys also had a great race. It was a hilly 2.9 mile course in Ellsworth. The girls’ team should be proud as class C girls are more competitive than both class B and class A. Next week we will travel to the Northern Maine Championship in Belfast where the top 30 athletes will advance to the State meet. Individual highlights: Girls: Esther Teasdale-Stinson, 12th place with a time of 22:35 (a SEVEN minute improvement since the last race on this course) Aubrey Gifford, 15th place with a time of 23:21 (2 minutes faster than last time on this course) Angie Willette, 22nd place with a time of 24:48 (3 minutes faster than last time on this course) Boys: Kodiak Gerken 20:07 (2 minute improvement since the last race on this course) Gavin McReavy 24:09 (SEVEN minute improvement since the last race on this course) GO LYNX!
